Council release climate change strategy

THE council will tackle climate change and a range of environmental issues with the launch of its first sustainability strategy.

The initiative is the result of over two-years work following extensive consultations with Trafford residents.

The council said the three-year plan focuses on issues such as climate change and fuel poverty.

Over half a million tonnes of carbon dioxide is produced from homes in Trafford every year, which is a staggering quarter of the total emissions in the borough.

Executive councillor Mrs June Reilly said: "Trafford has always been at the forefront of business in the north west. We are now taking steps to ensure we remain at the cutting edge of the new low carbon economy.

"All actions to reduce carbon emissions however small can have a positive effect on the environment. The new strategy will help businesses and residents to become more environmentally aware of the affect their actions can have and work toward reducing their carbon footprint."

The strategy will promote energy efficiency in the borough's 90,000 homes. Other features include reducing the council's own energy use and working with schools, leisure centres and housing associations to minimise their own impact on climate change.

The fundamental approach is to help businesses and residents save money on their fuel bills and help save the planet at the same time. A council tax rebate of £70 is being given to people who install energy efficiency measures such as loft or cavity wall insulation, with a financial payback for residents of around two-years, saving at least £100 per household.

The council is working with Action for Sustainable Living, a charity that aims to tackle environmental issues, to roll out this programme across eleven wards.

The council aims to cut carbon emissions by 25 per cent by 2020 through these measures. This includes making the most of wood resources and supporting businesses to prepare themselves for a low carbon environment.

It will also ensure that future planning permission is only given to developments that reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
