Borough breast care services to be moved
TRAFFORD'S breast care services are to be based permanently outside the borough, health chiefs have confirmed.
Diagnostic and surgical services will continue to be sited at Wythenshawe Hospital - confirming the current care package for Trafford residents.
The move comes three years after a breast screening crisis at Trafford General, when it was revealed that radiologist Amjad Husien had misdiagnosed scans.
He wrongly gave the all-clear to 43 women at Trafford General and North Manchester General Hospital, where he worked as a locum.
Shortly after his errors came to light, the Trafford service was suddenly closed.
The decision to base breast care outside Trafford is in line with the recommendations of Prof Mark Baker, who published a review of Trafford's under-fire service in February 2007.
He concluded that Trafford Healthcare (THT) NHS Trust should not be a provider of specialist breast care services. He proposed that a service model should be developed, in partnership with another NHS provider, "which provides a specialised and high quality breast care service which can be accessed via appropriate local facilities and which uses the skills of the experienced nursing and radiographic staff who still work at THT."
Sheena Cumiskey, chief executive of Trafford PCT, said: "This is good news for patients needing this important service. We have consulted widely with local people about future of breast care services over several months.
"Our decision is based on ensuring Trafford patients have access to a safe and high quality local service.
"The board discussed some of the issues relating particularly to transport. With this in mind the clinics offered by the breast care nurses will continue to be provided from the Trafford General Hospital site."
